“Are you nervous?”

I dragged my eyes from where I’d been staring out the window of the limousine to where Tad sat opposite me. He was lounging back in his seat, looking heartbreakingly suave in his tux, clean shaven and with a sculpted swoop in his hair. He looked dashing, and he knew it.

“Why would you think that?”

“You’re not the only one who’s picked up on some funny habits. Your leg has been jiggling like it’s having a seizure since we left the parking garage. That and you chew your lip when something makes you uncomfortable.”

I crossed my legs to keep them still and pressed my lips together. Stopping myself only made Tad’s smile widen. “No. Not nervous.”

Lies.

That was mostly true. Sort of. I had a hard time keeping my hands off my hair or from checking my makeup one more time to make sure everything was as perfect as when I’d gotten out of Wanda’s chair. I’d gotten used to that tiny, persistent, nagging voice that was more than happy to remind me there was always something I could do better. I was afraid of every jealous woman that would be heartbroken that Tad hadn’t chosen them. People could be downright cruel. I had accepted a long time ago that I’d never live up to the expectations of the demons in my head, but I was apprehensive of the fresh wounds an upset stranger could inflict.

I looked back out the window at the approaching chaos. “I want to make sure I don’t disappoint you.”

Tad rubbed a finger across his lips and smiled. “You could never disappoint me.”

That did ease my anxiety a bit. “Good.”

“Good.” Tad adjusted his bowtie and shifted in his seat so he could lean against the armrest. “Here I was thinking you were worried that your mom might see us.”

My anxiety kicked back into gear. “Why ever would you think that?”

“Because this awards show is broadcast on two major networks, and then bits and pieces of it will be replayed on dozens of others for several days after. Anything on YouTube is going to be permanent of course.”

“You think we’ll end up on YouTube?” I fanned myself with my hand. When had the limo gotten so stuffy?

“Probably. In some red carpet style review show or something. They like to nitpick everything to death. I never watch them.”

Of course I’d been worrying that my mom might somehow be privy to the secret life I was living but had justified she’d probably never see it.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” Tad asked. He was watching me with concern and had scooted to the edge of his seat. “You look green.”

“Tad, can you please lay off the green jokes? I get it. I’m wearing green. Haha. You’re hysterical.”

“No, really. You look like you’re going to hurl. Do you want me to dump out the ice bucket for you?”

“It’s fine. I was thinking of my parents after you mentioned it.”

“You’re worried they’ll find out.”

“Maybe. Yeah, a little. I’m sure it’ll be fine though.
